All You Need to Know About the Massage Envy Sexual Assault Lawsuit

    June 4, 2025Updated:June 4, 202504 Mins Read

Massage Envy is a popular national massage therapy chain with over 1,100 locations across the United States, offering various spa services such as massages, facials, and personal stretching.

Despite being a well-known brand, Massage Envy employs over 20,000 therapists, many licensed, performing over 18 million massages a year. This vast scale means the company should have clear and effective safeguards to prevent misconduct. Unfortunately, evidence from lawsuits suggests otherwise.

If you or someone you know was sexually assaulted or touched inappropriately during a massage at a Massage Envy location, it’s important to understand your rights. At File Abuse Lawsuit, our national sex abuse lawyers are currently seeking Massage Envy sexual assault cases.

Sexual Assaults by Massage Envy Therapists

Since around 2015, hundreds of women have reported being sexually assaulted by massage therapists working at Massage Envy franchises. The allegations include inappropriate touching, groping, and, in some cases, more serious assaults such as digital or oral penetration.

Most victims describe a similar scenario: lying face down during their massage with limited clothing and a towel for coverage when the assault occurred. The perpetrators were often male therapists who took advantage of the client’s vulnerable position. In some cases, the assaults were reported immediately to store managers or police.

One example involves a woman in Travis County, Texas, who sued in February 2025 after being groped and digitally penetrated during a massage at an Austin franchise. The lawsuit accuses the company and the franchise owner of failing to properly screen the therapist or act on his criminal background.

    Legal Actions and Lawsuit Updates

The first lawsuits began several years ago but have increased nationwide. In 2017, a BuzzFeed investigation exposed over 180 complaints and legal claims related to sexual abuse at Massage Envy. Since then, numerous lawsuits have been filed in various states, often alleging that the company knew about these risks but did little to stop them.

A notable criminal case involved 63-year-old James Dieter, a Massage Envy therapist in Pennsylvania, who admitted to sexually assaulting multiple clients and was sentenced to prison. Yet, these criminal charges are rare compared to the number of civil lawsuits.

The lawsuits generally claim that Massage Envy failed in three key areas: properly screening employees, enforcing policies to prevent abuse, and handling complaints effectively.

They argue the company prioritized secrecy and damage control, often using arbitration clauses and confidentiality orders to keep incidents hidden from the public.

Massage Envy Sex Abuse Lawsuit Settlements

Many of the lawsuits against Massage Envy have been resolved through confidential out-of-court settlements. While exact amounts are rarely disclosed, it is known that many cases involved strong evidence of prior complaints and systemic failures.

Insurance policies for individual franchises often cover up to $1 million per incident. Though this may sound like a large sum, survivors frequently need compensation beyond that for the psychological and emotional damage caused. Some franchises have even faced bankruptcy due to multiple claims.

Despite the settlements, the lack of transparency means the public remains largely unaware of the scope and severity of the abuse cases.

Frequently Asked Questions About Massage Envy Sexual Assault Lawsuits

Can I Still File a Lawsuit?

Yes. Even if the assault happened years ago, it may still be possible to file a lawsuit, depending on your state’s statute of limitations. Many victims hesitate to report assaults immediately but still have legal options.

Is Massage Envy Responsible If It Was a Franchise?

Yes. Lawsuits often include both the individual therapist and the franchise owner because franchises operate under Massage Envy’s brand and policies. The company can be held liable for negligence in hiring, training, and supervision.

How Much Could a Case Be Worth?

Case values vary depending on the evidence, the severity of harm, prior complaints against the therapist, and insurance limits. Cases with strong proof of systemic negligence generally have higher value.

    Why Are Settlements Usually Confidential?

Massage Envy uses confidentiality agreements to prevent negative publicity and keep details from the public, making it harder for other victims to come forward or for regulatory changes to happen.
